As we all know, New York Fashion Week is fast approaching and for those who are not completely knowledgeable of what happens during fashion week, it is a series of events that usually lasts for seven to nine days. During this week, designers present their collection to buyers, the press, and the general public through fashion presentations and runway shows. Since moving to New York in September 2013, I have been lucky enough to participate in the two different fashion weeks held in February and September 2014. I have seen designer shows and presentations like Alon Livne (friend to Paris Hilton), Jay Godfrey, Desigual, Jack Spade and more.
Here in New York, fashion week is not just about the shows and clothes, it is a celebration of diversity. Parties are held, photographers capture great moments, and people from different parts of the world are given an opportunity to collaborate and create something great.
From my experiences at fashion week, I was able to put together a list of things to take note of for those of you who have never attended fashion week at all and are looking to go. This applies to photographers, bloggers, stylists, writers and alike; here are a few things to look out for:
1) If you are looking to photograph, you have to be very pro active. Whether it is on the runway, at a presentation, or just simply photographing street style. There are thousands of other people who want the same photo that you want, therefore you have to be specific with yourself going in as it pertains to what exactly you want to capture. You will struggle with space, lighting, and air. For street style photographers, sometimes, the people you want a photo of might say no to your offer but do not let that discourage you. There are a thousand other people who will look just as amazing. Do not be afraid to act on your instinct and your vision. Never settle.
2) You must be friendly and approachable because networking is key. You never know whom you are going to meet and what that might do for your career. Do not be shy either. Go out of your way to compliment someone if you like something they are wearing, their make up, or anything else. Put yourself out there. Talk about yourself, exchange cards. Who knows where you both might go from there?
3) People come to fashion week with different agendas. Part of it includes showing off their outfits and being photographed by the swarm of photographers and media outlets inside and outside the shows. If you are looking to get photographed, pay attention to detail. Photographers love detail. I suggest great color palettes and emphasis on the accessories.
4) Believe it or not, most celebrities of the celebrities are nice enough to stop for photos. Regulars include Paris Hilton, Coco Rocha, and Karlie Kloss.
5) Do not try to be someone you are not or put up a front. For example, if you are asked about a certain designer you do not know, do not be afraid to say you do not know the designer. Being a phony is embarrassing and it does not make you look good because your true colors will eventually show.
6) If you are going to put on an outfit, own it. Do not take anything off once you have arrived on the scene. There will be many other people there who may have better outfits and bigger brand names on but as long as you own what you wear, you will attract someone.
7) Kyle Anderson from Marie Claire is fashion week royalty.
8) Have fun and be confident! Never think you are better than anyone else. It is never that serious.
HAPPY SHOPPING!
