Do you love your gloves but hate wearing them because you can’t easily navigate your phone without taking them on and off, over and over. Well, you’re in luck – you can make them smart or tech gloves in just a few minutes.
You will need:
1. Thread. The magic tech thread, actually called conductive thread – see here: Conductive thread. (*I choose the thinner thread)
2. Needle. Since I opted for the thinner thread I was able to use a regular thread needle
3. Your pair of gloves.
4. A pin or safety pin.
Instructions:
Step 1: Take into account if you’re left-handed or right-handed; whichever you are will be the glove you will tech-ify. Put the glove on and see which part of your thumb and pointer finger you actually use when touching your touch screen phone, or tablet. We have noticed for right-handed users, the best area to place the thread for the thumb is off center, outwards. But for the pointer finger it is generally direct center.

Starburst “x” stitching
Step 2: Gather your materials and thread and knot your needle & thread (take into account the right placement for you to begin stitching). Mark your center with a safety pin or push pin for a good placement and diameter guide. You will be making lots of crisscross “x” marks in a circular pattern to complete a starburst style circle. After reading a few other articles of people who have tried this DIY, they advise to keep the dot on the pointer finger very small (see below), while keeping the thumb stitching a bit larger. This is because when typing with the pointer finger you will need it to be exact, as to not hit multiple letters when trying to type. But for the thumb, a user will swipe a lot or use the corner of their thumb to type.
Step 3: After pinning your safety pin or push pin guide, for placement and approx. diameter, you’re ready to actually begin stitching. You will start with the glove inside out, and thread through to the top/outerside of the glove (that will be visible). Then make sure the thread line will mark an X across your placement guide pin. Once you thread it, you can remove your guide pin and replace it with a second thread line. Viola!- You will see your first X of the starburst. Continue stitching your X’s in a circular motion until you have your desired coverage. If the inside looks messy – not to worry because 1. no one will see it, and 2. the conductive energy works better when there is more thread touching your own finger on the inside – so its actually a good thing.
Step 4: Once you’ve completed your desired starburst circle, knot your thread on the inside, and you’re complete. You will feel the knot at the tips of your fingers and this will also help you when typing on your touch screen device. *See video Below.
