Lately I have been obsessed with finding the perfect stripe shirt, or what is also called the “Breton Stripe” shirt or a “Mariner Stripe” shirt. This simple top can go so far in one’s wardrobe this spring and summer. In fact, it really is a year round staple you can pair with seasonal colors. If you don’t have one yet it’s definitely time to update your wardrobe ASAP. *If you don’t have a classic navy striped shirt, that should be the first one to get!
The Perfect Stripe Shirt Guide:
1. The top of the shirt should be white (like a bib) to frame your face well.
Many stripe shirts these days do not necessarily have this white top, which is fine, but I think these look even better on everyone. If you choose one without the white top, then find one with a neckline that frames your face well. Embellishments, like buttons or lace (as seen in the above and below images) are also an alternative because it can draw the eye up toward your beautiful face. *Having the bottom edges of the sleeves & shirt solid white can be a nice balance to the white upper part of the top.
2. The classic Mariner stripe shirt has a boatneck neckline.
And because it’s sort of the traditional neckline for such a shirt, it has become the top choice. The boatneck cuts straight across, keeping with the clean lines of the stripes. The boatneck just adds a little shape to a simple, yet classic Mariners sweater.
3. The Stripes can’t be too small! (*with only one exception).
Stripes that are too skinny make the shirt no longer a a classic look, but instead it becomes a boring stripe shirt. Stick to a bolder stripe where there’s at least equal amount of white between the stripes (you want to actually see white between the stripes). Now, the *exception is with more modern stripe shirts that have graphics or embellishments on top of the stripes. In this case … opt for skinny stipres so the stripes are not in competition with the embellishments or graphic.
4. Small details and embellishments can be a nice touch.
For a classic Breton stripe shirt you may find small round gold, bronze, or navy buttons which can add just a little bit more style to the shirt, making it more than just a tee. Whereas, if you’re looking for an alternative to the navy and white striped top, you may find updated modern stripe shirts with lace detailing (as seen in the taupe striped shirt below), sequin embellishments, or graphics on top of the stripes.
5. The classic stripe shirt must be 3/4 length sleeves or full length.
My personal favorite is the 3/4 length sleeve because whenever I have full length sleeves on I always end up pushing them up. Long sleeves that are constantly pushed up will stretch over time and that will change the look of the sleeve when worn normal.
6. Good quality fabric, usually a bit heavier than the average tee, is best.
The slightly heavier fabric can really help in keeping the perfect stripe shirt for a longer bit of time (some of the better ones aren’t so cheap – approx. $100, but that means better quality and longer lifetime). Also, a quality shirt can ensure its versatility. You’ll be able to wear it tucked in with a midi skirt and heels, with your favorite pair of jeans and converse, or even to the beach on top of your swimsuit.
7. If you tend to live in colder weather, or are currently in a Fall/Winter, definitely opt for the sweater as I did!
Modern Update to the Stripe Shirt: For those of you who have already found your classic Mariners sweater/shirt and want an updated version, go for a neutral stripe or another classic color (red, nude, forest green, or even black) that can last throughout any season. Also, if you are opting for another color, choose one with crochet or lace trims, sequin embellishments, or graphics. This would really update your classic striped tee look.
