I stick to my guns when I say that I wanted white hot blonde hair first! After a year of begging my hairdresser, Vito Esposito, to take me white he finally gave in this past week. When I say white hot blonde, I’m talking not just bleach blonde, but literally white hair with a more ashy tone. I couldn’t be more ecstatic!!!
I first saw the look in public on @thehautepursuit when I started following her on Instagram about 2 years ago. She went white blonde a little over a year and a half ago, and is totally rocking the look. The trend has been trending like crazy and can be seen on celebrities like Michelle Williams, Rita Ora, and Yolanda from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
If this is your first rodeo going lighter, I’m sure you have a ton of questions…. like, Will it wash out my skin color? Should I have warmer or cooler tones? Should I add highlights or lowlights? Am I going to lose all me hair?!
I’ll make it simple for you:
- White blonde hair won’t wash you out if you choose the rights tones that are appropriate for you. Make sure you have a great colorist that understands this.
- Warmer/lighter tones will give you a warm glow, enhancing the look of rosy skin. Cooler/lighter tones will give the opposite affect, enhancing the color tones in your skin. According to Mz. Hazan olive skin should have more of a beige or honey hue, and lighter skin tones can go more white. The in-look is a bit more edgy with dark roots, if that’s your thing.
- Highlights and lowlights create dimension in your hair. You need to decide if you want flat color or the illusion of movement. When choosing between highlights and lowlights, the choice depends on skin tone. If you have olive/darker skin, avoid brassy highlights. Lowlights accentuate the blonde, making it (and yourself) look brighter.
- Processing your hair to this extreme white blonde will cause breakage – your hair will get damaged no matter what. Be prepared that it might be wise to get a shorter cut.
- Know that if you are going white blonde in one sitting, it will take at least 8 hours in the chair. Every touch up is at least 4 hours. Soo Joo Park’s hair took 10 hours to go from black to white blonde… Needless to say, bring magazines. Most colorists recommend that you come in your touch-ups every 4-6 weeks.

When going to a salon, make sure to….
1. Have a consultation with your colorist beforehand.
They should be able to let you know what your hair can handle, what shade is best for your skin tone, how long the process will take, and what kind of maintenance you are looking at (appointment wise AND money wise). THIS IS AN INVESTMENT!
2.Know what look you want & Bring examples of the look you are going for.
Knowing what you want is key to getting what you want. (Also understanding what your hair can do is import an!) If you have a warmer skin color, bring example pictures of people with your similar skin tone and the hair you want. The same goes for lighter skin color. Do your homework, know what you want and be clear about your vision.
3. Now let’s GET REAL..Be Aware of your stylists abilities/or your own hair abilities.
Be aware of your stylist’s abilities! If you hair is medium to dark brown (like mine and Kim Kardashian’s) your stylist may want to take a phased approach to getting you towards white hair. I think this is fine.. but if in 3 months you aren’t even very light blonde – go somewhere or to SOMEONE ELSE! Don’t waste money, because it is expensive, on someone who doesn’t know how or is not confident in taking you where you want to be. Chances are that they will not ever get you to even light blonde or that their vision for you is not your vision. I had this fail once and had to move on to another stylist. But I admit I prepped my current stylist well in advance with the seriousness of what I wanted (LOL). It did take me longer than 3 months to get closer to white; but I still have my hair and each time I went in I saw a change in the right (white) direction. In the end, I did have to give my stylist another push to go even white-er and I was happy that he successfully challenged himself to do so. With this said – I have to admit, I am blessed with strong hair and a lot of it. SO, keep in mind that if you have consulted many stylists that advise against it – please take their advice in and rethink the white hair look. All in all, I hope you’re inspired to be playful with your own hair ..xoxo.
*Don’t try this at home! You don’t want to go from luscious locks to bald.
